課程概述

This course is designed for master students in the field of agricultural and environmental economics. The goal of this course is to provide an overview of modern empirical methods and their intuitive framework, with an emphasis on causal inference used in applied microeconomics.

The course will spend significantly more time on practical implementation than most other graduate level econometrics courses (at NTU and other universities in Taiwan) do. Students will work on empirical tasks using econometric/statistical software throughout the semester. In turn, the course will not spend much time on the formal details, but the students are still expected to learn some details themselves (mostly from the course references). Following the profession’s convention, the primary software is Stata, but some complementary tools in R will also be introduced.

The course will be structured as semi-flipped-classroom. That is, students are asked to complete relevant virtual lectures and seminars before each session. A general guideline to navigate through the course is (1) read the associated chapters on the main course references (see required readings), (2) complete the assigned virtual lectures and seminars, (3) attend the sessions, and (4) read the assigned readings.

課程目標
The ultimate and most practical goal of this course is to prepare the students for their thesis projects through exposure to research papers and some of the most commonly used empirical methods. Although the course is still oriented toward training academic researchers in the field of applied economics, students will likely find the course content useful for any careers requiring skills of “research” and problem solving. By completing the course, students are expected to: (1) understand the intuitions of the causal interference methods, (2) learn how to read empirical research papers, and (3) gain experiences of practical implementation of empirical projects.
課程要求
(1) Assignments and readings: voluntary assignments will be available at least every other week. Students are encouraged to submit their assignments for feedback. The assignments mostly comprise coding exercises focusing on empirical tasks relevant to causal inference methods. Readings using the introduced methods will be assigned weekly.

(2) Midterm and Final: two exams will be held on the university’s assigned weeks. The exams will focus on evaluating students’ understanding of selected empirical papers. The midterm and final are required to be completed within 12 hours and the grades are adjusted to the completion time:
